Let's say you, or your significant other, has been away for most of the past three months. You get to see each other for exactly 24 hours out of every seven days. You miss each other.

Finally, your loved one returns home for good. You rejoice! Finally, you can enjoy life at home to its fullest, basking in the warm glow of each other's company.

Or not. We decided to echo last June's sojourn by going on a road trip. Lake Tahoe and Yosemite are too close (and besides, Yosemite's waterfalls are best seen in May or June — not August). Arizona and Utah are too far. Oregon? Yes, Oregon is just right. Pretty, we heard, and not discouragingly distant.

So, we left our humble home on August 29th and set out for Oregon, making some important stops: Lassen Volcanic National Park, Crater Lake National Park, and finally Portland.
