Accomplishment

stepping out with my diploma
under one arm
my credentials memorized
my crisp white resume in twelve point font
and triplicate
I had not intended to find you
while I was searching for a career
but
the interesting starlights glistening around the corners
of your bright eyed explanations
caught me unaware
when I had discovered you there in
your gray office chair with your fearless
imagination and impeccable memory
I whispered to myself nightly that I would not
fall trip stumble slip slide pitch or plunge
like I had before in desperation and abandonment
I would not teeter on the brink precariously not
hang on to the edge of some great precipice by my
weak nail bitten fingers
I would remain confidently distant and secured on lands where
I could build something valuable
something to bolster my resume
but you
invited me into your office
you remembered my name
you encouraged my smile
you stood next to me on the deck of the office Christmas party
and said
lightly
that I had warm hands and beautiful hair
and that was just the begining
